Grounding, Earthing and Bonding
Grounding
- The current carrying part is connected to ground.
- Protect the power system equipment.
- Provides the return path for the unwanted current and hence protect the power system equipment from damage gives the path to an unwanted current and hence protects the electrical equipment from damage.
Example: Neutral of generator and power transformer is connected to ground.
Earthing
- The connection of non-current carrying part of the equipment to the earth
- Protect the human from electric shock
Example: The enclosure of the transformer, generator, motor etc. are connected to the earth
Bonding
It means to connect two metallic parts with a PE cable.
Safety/Protective Earthing (PE)
Undetected earth faults pose safety risks to personnel also may lead to safety hazards such as equipment malfunctions, fire, and electric shock.
Instrumentation Earthing (IE)
The primary aim of the instrument earth/signal earth is to provide a low impedance path to the noise currents induced by RFI/EMI, which may result in the induction of faulty unwanted noise signals into the analog signals.
Intrinsic Safety Earthing (ISE)
It is an earthing method in hazardous area application.
