Causes and Effect of Transient Distortion
Transient is a momentary variation in electrical voltage, current, or frequency. This transient phenomena is caused by several factors. Sources that cause transient disturbances in industrial electrical systems are categorized into internal sources and internal sources. Furthermore, this article will also discuss the effects or impacts of transient distortions on electrical systems and equipment. Also, we will briefly discuss solutions for handling and overcoming electrical transient problems in industrial electrical systems. —Omazaki Consultant is a consultant who provide services seeking for the root causes of transients. Then, we propose solutions to mitigate the impact of transients that may exist. If you are looking for a power quality measurement and observation consultant, please contact us by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by filling in the form in contact.
Types of Transient
Impulsive transients are sudden non-power frequency changes of voltage, current or both in a steady state with one polarity, positive or negative polarity.
Impulsive transients are sudden non-power frequency changes of voltage, current or both in a steady state with two polarity, positive and negative polarity.
The Effect of Electrical Transient
There are many effect or impact caused by electrical transient in industry. Some of them are:
- Failed electronics
- Computer lockups
- Flashover and arcing effects in distribution equipment
- Insulation failure
Sources of Electrical Transient
In general, there are 2 (two) sources of transient causes in industrial electrical systems, internal sources and external sources.
Internal Sources of Transient
- Starting large loads, especially large inductive
- Short-circuit faults on large load
- Sudden stoppage of large equipment
- Re-energizing systems after a power failure
- Switching of capacitors
- Dirty or worn contactors
- Similar operations in neighboring facilities
External Sources of Transient
- Bad weather
- Indirect lightning strike or induction
- Neighboring electricity operations with the same substation or feeder
Solution to Transient for Industrial
The most common solutions to prevent or mitigate transient distortion effects are:
- Lightning arrester (LA) for transmission and distribution lines
- Surge protection devices (SPD) or transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS)
- Isolation transformer
